Getting locked out of your car in Denver is stressful. Here is a straightforward order of operations for how to handle it.
1. Make sure you're actually locked out
Check every door and the trunk. Modern cars sometimes lock the driver's door but leave a rear door open. If you have the fob in your pocket and the vehicle has push-to-start, walk up and try the handle — proximity sensors and low fob batteries account for a lot of what people think are lockouts.
2. Call roadside assistance if you already pay for it
If you have AAA, OnStar, or roadside coverage through your insurance or warranty, call them first. Two things to know:
- Roadside will not cut or program a new key. If your keys are lost or truly stuck inside and can't be retrieved, you may still need a locksmith.
- Wait times vary. If time matters, ask for a realistic ETA before you commit to waiting.
3. Call a mobile locksmith
A mobile locksmith can often help with vehicle lockouts, cut and program a new key, or diagnose an issue that roadside won't touch. Ask what the visit will involve and what it will cost before dispatch.

4. Avoid DIY tools on newer vehicles
Coat hangers and slim jims are risky on newer vehicles — you can tear weatherstripping, damage a window regulator, or catch airbag or wiring lines. A trained tech uses tools designed for the vehicle to avoid damage.
5. Stay safe while you wait
If it's hot, get yourself, pets, and kids out of direct sun. If it's late or you feel unsafe, wait inside a lit business and tell the locksmith where you are.
